Travel from Hue to the spectacular cave systems of Phong Nha over 3 thrilling days. This itinerary seamlessly blends the historic battlefields of the DMZ with the breathtaking natural beauty of the West Ho Chi Minh Trail and Ke Bang National Park.
Road trip: Hue city – DMZ – Vinh Moc tunnel – Khe Sanh – HCM trail – Phong Nha national park – Dong Hoi city
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Hue to DMZ to Khe Sanh
We ride Highway 1 to Quang Tri town, visiting Long Hung Church and the Quang Tri Old Citadel, a battlefield from 1972. We ride the coast from Cua Viet Beach to Cua Tung Beach, visit the Vinh Moc tunnels, and stop at the DMZ (Hien Luong – Ben Hai). We visit the Truong Son cemetery, then climb into the Truong Son foothills, passing the Rock Pile before arriving in Khe Sanh around 5:00 PM.
Day 2: Khe Sanh to Phong Nha Caves
After visiting the Khe Sanh combat base, we ride the scenic West Ho Chi Minh trail through jungles, mountains, and Paco and Van Kieu minority villages. We ride through the Sa Mu pass and U Bo pass before staying in Son Trach village near the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park entrance.
Day 3: Phong Nha to Dong Hoi (Two Options)
- Option 1: Take a 5km boat trip along the Son River to tour Phong Nha Cave and Tien Son Cave. In the afternoon, swim in the Suoi Nuoc Mooc Springs
- Option 2: Ride a motorbike to Paradise Cave. In the afternoon, enjoy a mud bath and zip-line into the Dark Cave.
Both options finish by riding the East Ho Chi Minh trail to Phong Nha town/ Dong Hoi city
